....Giving followers a reason to trust you
Ever asked yourself the question, "What gives me credibility in the eyes of others?” This is an important question every leader must periodically ask him or her self.
What is credibility? Where does it come from? How do I maintain it? Good questions, huh?
Below I have listed four absolutes that every leader must incorporate into their life in order to establish and maintain credibility. Let's look at them.
1. God’s authentication on your life
The number one reason people will follow you is because they see God’s hand of authentication on your life. It’s not the flamboyant personality - or your polished ability to preach and communicate. It is simply because they see God working in and through your life.
There is nothing more powerful than when God affirms your life and leadership.
See: Josh. 3:7, I Sam. 3:19, Gen. 39:1-3
2. Personal Encounters with God
You cannot be a spiritual leader unless you periodically meet God in profound, life changing ways.
All one has to do is read the biographies of great men and women to understand that virtually all spiritual contributions flow out of a personal encounter with God.
When will we get it - only God can truly change our lives and make us effective?
See: Jn. 15: 1-8
3. Character and Integrity
It's impossible to over exaggerate the value of character and integrity. Integrity literally means being consistent under every circumstance of life, including one's unguarded moments.
When leaders walk in integrity, those who follow them know just what to expect. When leaders prove themselves capable of deceit in one area; it's a given they are also capable of being deceitful in other areas.
4. A Successful Track Record
Few things bring a leader more credibility than consistent, long-term success. Credibility is not something that we can demand from others - it must be earned.
Start by accomplishing small successes. David didn’t start out with the giant, he started by chasing off snakes, coyotes, lions and bears. Small successes will buy you credibility - step at a time.
Conclusion:
Your credibility is like a bank account. You’re either making deposits or withdrawals. Consistently goof-up and you’re making withdrawals – Consistently succeed and you’re making deposits. Make sure you are working on the correct side of the ledger!
Credibility - Do you have it? If so, are you guarding it? You’re going to need it sooner or later. No leader can operate without.
